My Own Wand

I wanted to make my own wand, so I did. With the help of my dad, who has a wood turning machine, I turned the wand from the leg of an old mahogany table. As the wand evolved from the wood, so the design evolved and became a mixture of several designs I had come up with. Once the rough shape was carved, I refined it with sandpaper. When the turning and sanding was finished, I hand carved the other elements into it. Finally, I stained, painted and waxed the wand to make it look as if it was used and worn. The design is somewhere between a flower bud and its leaf, an artist’s brush, and the finial from a piece of furniture.
